For businesses like retail establishments, restaurants, coffee, doughnut and ice cream shops, foot traffic is a determinant element for running a successful operation.

Foot Traffic is an important factor for a business that caters to travelers

High traffic is important for many businesses because the higher the foot traffic, the more opportunity there is for sales.

You can find more opportunities in foot-traffic when you do a little research.

If it's a mom-and-pop business, maybe the owner will sit in a chair with a pencil and notebook and count throughout the day the number of people walking by a particular spot.

In order to be able to maximize the detail of foot-traffic data (and depending on your type of business and how you wish to use that data), tallying the demographics of these pedestrians and the times of day can be very useful.

Target the right demographics with a sign

If you are a coffee shop inside a grocery store, and the foot-traffic consists of mostly women between 40 and 50, you can use a sandwich board with specials targeting them. If you're also gathering client data and know what those women are ordering, your sign can be more focused on your target.

Optimizing and Maximizing your data

Gathering several layers of insight from that data can also help you keep a multi-dimensional marketing approach

Your data could also show there is a second demographic you may be able to effectively target with your marketing efforts. And with a bit of creativity and a lot of hard data, you can effectively experiment with different approaches and tactics.

In this, all experts agree: crafting a "marketing persona" is vital for any of your marketing efforts. Gathering hard data from foot-traffic can make a huge difference for your business.
